The Success of the Quantum Leben Academy

Article

Life insurer Quantum Leben, based in Liechtenstein and active in the Dutch market since 2009, has been collaborating with ambitious students from Tilburg University for over three years and more recently, with students from Eindhoven University of Technology. Through the Quantum Leben Academy, students not only gain practical experience in the insurance sector, but also contribute fresh perspectives that drive innovation and growth within the company. By empowering young talent to manage risks, innovate with numbers, and shape the insurance industry, the Academy is unlocking the future of the sector.

Since its establishment in September 2021, Quantum Leben has welcomed a growing number of students. Currently, an average of eight to eleven student colleagues are active within the actuarial team. They combine their studies with essential tasks for Quantum Leben, playing a key role in the company’s ongoing development. In addition to processing quotation requests, they work on:

  • Developing and improving premium models

  • Conducting benchmark research on premiums

  • Maintaining and enhancing our online premium calculation tools

  • Developing reserving models

  • Performing data analysis and modelling

  • Enhancing our data warehouse

  • Optimising data structures

Initially, Quantum Leben primarily attracted econometrics students from Tilburg University. However, its focus has since broadened, and students with backgrounds in Data Science, Industrial Design, and Physics now also contribute to the team. Moreover, students are involved in other departments, such as Legal & Compliance and Marketing & Communication.

Over the past three years, the Quantum Leben Academy has proven to be a valuable initiative for developing young professionals and fostering innovation within the company. Some students continue their careers at Quantum Leben after graduation, while others enter the job market with a solid foundation. Quantum Leben remains committed to investing in young talent and strengthening collaborations with universities to help shape the future of the insurance sector.

Dr. Cristian Dobre, Associate Professor and Programme Director of the Master’s in Business Analytics and Operations Research at Tilburg University, highlights the importance of this collaboration:

“The ultimate goal of a serious (Master’s) programme is for society to fully benefit from the knowledge and skills that graduates have acquired. In this case, that knowledge revolves around complex, highly mathematical optimisation and AI models. The Quantum Leben Academy offers impactful projects for Master’s theses, making the graduation process more valuable for both students and society.”
